Pick & Mix is the museum's first-ever online exhibition. Hosted on Instagram, @pickandmixtsm explores 800 years of history in Salisbury and the surrounding areas through objects and community voices. Each object tells a unique story about the city and local area and the people who have lived here. It features selected items from the museum’s collections and those submitted by the public.
This is our first step towards redisplaying the museum’s History of Salisbury Gallery with help from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the community. Which objects or themes would you like to see on display in the new gallery? Visit the exhibition to like your favourite objects and tell us what they mean to you.
Do you have an object or photograph that tells a story about Salisbury or the surrounding areas - either past or present? Send us a picture or video to include in the exhibition. Visit the exhibition website to find out how.
Martin Shalders, a Collections Volunteer at Salisbury Museum had this to say about our Salisbury snuff sign, one of the highlights of the exhibition, pictured above:
"Before the demise of the cigarette, the cheroot and the cigar, there was snuff. The man about town, the beau, the toff of the 19th century was never without his box of snuff. The box was often highly decorated and very personal and a constant companion. The art of sniffing snuff from an aristocratic hand to stimulate the emotions was an essential art!"
Our Community Curator, Sarah, has developed a series of videos to help you explore personal objects and histories, memories and stories and how they connect to Salisbury and the local area. You can find them on YouTube on our Pick & Mix playlist. We'll be releasing one new video a week during May. Subscribe to the museum YouTube channel to receive updates when a new video is posted.
