6.30 pm Drinks, 7.00 pm lecture. A lecture by Dr R E Foster. Russ Foster, who lives in Salisbury, is an historian and author who has made a special study of the ‘Iron Duke’. His illustrated talk will discuss the huge impact which the Battle of Waterloo had on the British nation in the years after 1815. In particular, he considers how Wellington’s finest hour was commemorated, notably in paintings and sculptures. The conclusions are sometimes surprising: The legacy of Waterloo was both contested and politicised. As we approach the bicentenary, it continues to be so.
