Bowerchalke Iron Age Hoard

Iron Age, 100BC

This stunning collection of gold staters (coins) were found by metal detectorists near Bowerchalke. They are associated with a local tribe, the Durotriges. The designs are derived from classical Greek prototypes – the coins display the abstract head of the Greek god Apollo on the obverse and a disjointed horse on the reverse.

Acquired with the financial assistance of the V&A Purchase Grant Fund, The Art Fund and the Beecroft Bequest.
