Cream Satin Spencer

1817-1820

Satin spencers, such as this, were frequently worn by women over their dresses in the early 19th century. The cropped style was originally popularised by the Earl of Spencer, who is said to have burnt the coat-tails off his jacket. The rouleau, rope detailing, was inspired by the military uniforms worn during the Napoleonic Wars. The slash and puff sleeves were inspired by 16th century fashion.
