Oil on canvas by T. W. Gray
Henry Hatcher (1777 – 1846) was an antiquary and author of numerous literary works including the Historical Account of Old and New Sarum (1843), an 800 page volume. Authorship of this volume was shared with Robert Benson, Deputy Recorder of the City. There was some controversy when Hatcher’s preface was suppressed, and the account was published principally under Mr Benson’s name. Later Hatcher wrote an indignant foreword protesting his integrity and claiming his sole authorship.
