Reform Bottles

Reform bottles of Lord Brougham and Lord Grey, about 1832. The bottle of Lord Brougham was found in the back garden of The Crown and Anchor, Exeter Street, Salisbury. These bottles were made by Doulton and Watts at the Lambeth Pottery to commemorate the 1832 Reform Act. Lord Grey formed a new Whig government in 1830 committed to reform. Lord Brougham, a Whig, was Lord Chancellor and a prominent spokesman on parliamentary reform. He visited Salisbury in 1834 and gave a speech on the success of the Act from the balcony of the White Hart Hotel which was 'received with hearty approval … by a mass of the inhabitants'.
