Self Portrait

1924

By Rex Whistler

Oil on canvas

Self portrait from 1924 undertaken whilst the artist was still at the Slade School of Art. This is possibly the earliest attempt that Rex made to undertake portraiture in oils. This painting may have been referred to in a letter sent to his friend Ronald Fuller on 28 Jan 1924: 'I am at present at work on a painting of myself; with mirror beside my canvas. I find my sitter always most obliging, &, unlike some others, always ready to pose for me when I wish!'
