Winchester Bushel

Bushels measured grain and other agricultural produce. By royal decree all measures complied with those in Winchester and London – hence the term Winchester bushel. In 1491 Parliament petitioned King Henry VII to make new ‘weights and measures of brass’ for towns and cities throughout England. From the set issued to Salisbury, this is the sole survivor which dates to 1497.
