Yellow Wedding Dress

1879

Bought in Paris, this dress was worn by Jinny Townsend on her wedding day in 1879. Yellow was a fashionable colour in the Victorian period. Jinny’s diary survives and in it she describes the trip to Paris to buy the dress, a month before her wedding.

Jinny lived just around the corner in the Cathedral Close. She had three children in just three years of marriage before she died in 1882.
