Funding success for The Salisbury Museum with Fashioning Our Future project
Today, The Salisbury Museum is announcing a £237,000 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund for the Fashioning Our Future project, enabling young people to share their own perspectives by co-curating fashion exhibitions to be displayed at The Salisbury Museum, Blandford Fashion Museum and Southampton City Art Gallery.
Using money raised by National Lottery players, The National Lottery Heritage Fund supports projects that connect people and communities with the UK’s heritage. Thanks to National Lottery players Fashioning Our Future will enable young people to gain new skills, grow in confidence, and have new experiences by planning and taking part in workshops and events. The fashion collections at The Salisbury Museum and Blandford Fashion Museum will be valued and relevant to both young people and the community, providing both collections with a more sustainable future.
The fashion collection at The Salisbury Museum contains over 3,500 items dating from the last 300 years. The garments are from all aspects of life including weddings and christenings, formal occasions, and occupations such as farming and the military. Accessories also form a large part of the collection, and these include fans, brooches, parasols, buttons, gloves, hats and shoes. The funding awarded from the National Lottery Heritage Fund will make possible the transformation of the fashion storerooms, and in addition enable the creation of a new study room.
Volunteers will work alongside the project team to achieve this, ensuring the collection is protected, valued and much more accessible. They will help research the collection, sharing their knowledge and textile skills with young people, including young carers.

Funded by the 1911 Chipperfield Bequest, Southampton City Art Gallery opened in 1939 and offers the opportunity to enjoy high quality exhibitions ranging from painting, sculpture and drawing to photography and film, as well as permanent collections and displays that change regularly to ensure new experiences with each visit.
