Director’s Walk: Heywood Sumner and the Archaeology of the New Forest

Saturday, October 18, 2025

10am – 4pm

Join Adrian Green, Director of the Salisbury Museum, for a stroll through the New Forest and discover some of the historic sites excavated by archaeologist Heywood Sumner.

George Heywood Maunoir Sumner (1853 – 1940) was a man of many talents. In the earlier part of his life he was a leading member of the Arts and Crafts movement. His work covered a wide area, ranging from engraving, painting and sgcraffito to designing tapestries and furniture. In 1897 due to the ill health of his wife, he moved from London to Bournemouth and then the New Forest. For the next forty years he studied local natural history, geology, folklore and archaeology.

The walk will start at Gorley Common and goes past Sumner’s former home and then on towards Linwood where lunch is available at the High Corner Inn (not included in price).

In the afternoon we cross the forest to the Latchmore Brook which leads back towards the carpark.

Precise details of the meeting point will be sent in your booking confirmation email.

Limited to 25 spaces.
