Visions of an Old Landscape by Sam Smiles

Thursday, October 16, 2025

Wiltshire has inspired countless artists over the years, drawn to its archaeological heritage and to the immensity of its downland landscape. Spanning three centuries of creative activity, this talk will examine some of their responses, concentrating on the varied reactions of painters, printmakers and photographers to the prehistoric and historic sites of the county and to their natural surroundings.

Sam Smiles is a judge for our landscape open competition. He is Honorary Professor, University of Exeter and an art historian whose research and publications are focused on British landscape painting.
