Bow Inkwell

Dated 1750

This rare soft paste porcelain inkwell, one of only 40 dated examples, was made at Bow in London, where porcelain was first produced in 1747. Decorated in overglaze enamels, it is inscribed ‘Made in New Canton’, the name given to a new factory established there in 1749. This is yet another reference to China, implying that this is the equal of the best imported porcelain.
