By Rex Whistler

Brown ink on paper

Rex was awarded a honorary scholarship at the British School in Rome and spent April to August 1928 in the city. This is the elaborate title page from the sketchbook started on this visit. The drawing includes a self-portrait bust on a pedestal (top right). The sketchbook was lost on a train to Munich in 1929, but was found and returned to the artist's brother Laurence in 1959.
