Sophie Bartlett was the winner of the inaugural Landscape Open Competition in 2025, with her artwork, Hawkley Hangers VI.
Following her win, Sophie has been drawing and painting in the landscapes of Wiltshire and Hampshire. In late spring, before the heatwave, she worked among Wiltshire’s chalk downland and valleys, where trees stood in full, verdant leaf. In the intense heat of high summer, her attention turned to fields of linseed on the South Downs in Hampshire. This solo show showcases work inspired by these two landscapes at different moments in the season – and complements the Landscape Open 2026 competition.
Sophie’s practice is rooted in sustained observation working across the traditional genres of landscape, figure and still life. She begins with extensive drawing to inhabit her subject, then develops paintings through an ongoing dialogue between perception and memory, seeking what she calls ‘pictorial rightness.’
Sophie Bartlett studied at West Surrey College of Art & Design and Hull College of Art, and recently completed an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art, where she received the Vice-Chancellor’s Achievement Scholarship (2024).
